Delnorin Playing the Guitar and Singing
« on: November 28, 2011, 02:58:29 PM »
Sort of a strange thread to start.. but hey.. I don't have a shy bone in my body.. even when I know people will laugh.

I thought I could start a thread.... and as I improve I can put up more little videos.  Sort of an encouragement to get better and better for myself.

Isaiah 38:20
The LORD was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Since I have a voice that sounds like a raccoon in a blender and the only "instrument" I can play is a kazoo...you're doin' all right!

WooHoo!

This past Sunday we sang this song in church.  I perked up when I noticed the guy playing something different than the C2 chord that I was playing in the song.  Got me to thinking that the jump from the C2 chord to the D chord that I was doing (and having the most difficulty in doing).. might have an alternate fingering that would work just fine.

I loaded up YouTube... Woot!  There is a C2 chord/fingering that lets me keep fingers 3 and 4 in place all the way through the G chord then the E-minor chord and then straight into the C2 chord.  Then finger 3 is already in place and doesn't need to be moved at all for the D chord.. then back up to G.  It's FANTASTIC.

Now I have to train my fingers to get from the new C2 chord to the D.... and I'm golden.

I'll update a new vid once I nail this.

This vid is the new fingering... mucho bettero:

Christian Guitar Chords - "How Great Is Our God"

The guy flubs the fingerings a few times.. but hey.. it sounds amazing compared to what I do.. and his voice is HUGE better than mine.. so I'm not complaining.  Just don't bash him so much when you see his fingers 3 and 4 down for the E minor when they shouldn't be.  I'm going to leave mine down because I think it sounds find anyway... and it has my 3rd finger in place for the D already.. so it makes it much easier to just leave those fingers in place anyway.  If it sounded bad I'd adjust.. but like the guy in the vid.. it doesn't seem to sound any worse at all.

Sweetness.  I think I have the song down at about 90% now.  I really wanted to push on to the next song and something new.  I'll keep practicing and polishing this first song but to keep the new-exciting level up and the motivation I wanted to be able to at least play something other than one song.

Here is "How Great Is Our God"... at 90%.

12-11-11 How Great Is Our God - Take 2

The next song is "Blessed Be Your Name"..... this is a total rush.  The learning curve is fantastic!  The first one was all quarter notes.. just getting the transaction from one chord to the next to the next.. pretty basic.  Blessed Be Your name has a fairly simplistic chord progression also... a quarter note, a quarter note rest, another quarter note and then two eighth notes... it just keeps repeating that.. G, D, Eminor, C.... G, D, Eminor, C.  A month ago I'd never be able to do it.. but now it just fell into place in about an hour.

The big stickler though is being able to sing it and play it at the same time.  I think I need to slow down on this one and break it into parts.  I'm going to make a video rather soon with just playing the song on the computer speakers (CD Player) and me playing the guitar along with it.. without singing it at all.  Then... maybe the next step would be to just play the verses and at the chorus sing and play.. then the last step.. throw it all together with just me playing and singing.. no song playing in the background with me.

At the same time it's getting more complex; it seems to also be getting more simplistic... the moving from chord to chord is slowly becoming second nature.

It's like learning to ride a bike for the first time I guess.  You suddenly realize.. hey... I can DO this !  It's just going to take more scraped knees.  If I can be more bull-headed than I think about the pain.. then I'll make it happen.  Heh.

Even the Blues great BB King could not sing and play at the same time.

Keep playin, Del.
