Sounds like an old principle with a high tech twist ( solid shot ) . I think John Paul Jones would approve .

They can use anything they choose as a projectile?

Metal wise or shape wise?

I know they mentioned using blunt shapes to measure variances in trajectories, they have plans to go to a more recognizable projectile shape.  As to materials I don't think they said, but due to the use of magnetic fields, the projectile should be made of conductive materials like copper and silver...I am guessing they are exploring elements and perhaps are putting less expensive heavy metals in the interior and wrapping it in conductive material, so perhaps the thing is like a super-supersonic HP!

 ::hysterical::

On a carrier when one wants to warm up the cat (catapult) they would shoot the shuttle down unloaded, thus the term "no-load".  Sometimes we would launch old boots or other low-mass items off just for poops & giggles.  I can't think of anything more low-mass than Stymie, so I am thinking a no-load like that won't go far on a railgun without first being wrapped in conductive material!

Carry on!

(CPPDP) Copper Plated Pig Dung Projectile fired on a ballistic trajectory eastward from the Persian Gulf.

Visions of them splattering the decks of their ships but they probably couldn't withstand the impact.

A variation the CPPPP, copper plated pig parts and the CPPLP, copper plated pig lard and CPPSP, copper plated pig slop.

  I think it has to be magnetic.

If they want to shoot a "no load", they could always use a Democrat!

Wouldn't work...they aren't magnetic.

You could strap a Democrat to a slug and then shoot them out of the gun.

Or you could line a bunch of them up and see how many you could penetrate before the slug quits going forward. Could be several hundred.

In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.
