I just posted this at Neo-Neocon:

OK, breathe. Calm, calm, calm.

I just went over to the Market Ticker to link the following post, which appeared this morning. It’s about the radical, anti-nuclear past of our present chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Gregory Jaczko. You may recall that yesterday he announced that the spent fuel pool atop Reactor 4 was completely dry. That was not and is not true.

Beware Scaremongers In Government: The NRC

Go on. It’s worth reading.

But then I saw THIS.

I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it proved true that this administration based its assistance on Japan acting in certain ways, even to its detriment.  These people have a goal and will ruling nothing out in pursuit of it.

Speaking of that, I've been hearing "news" reports stating "the US" has been insisting the zone around potential high-radiation areas be expanded despite what the Japanese have determined.

Where the cacophony of admonitions that we "stop meddling in other countries' business" and "the American way isn't the only way" from the usual suspects? Crickets.

I've heard that.  I also read yesterday that after Jaczko made his announcement, some Japanese people called the U.S. Embassy saying that their media weren't reporting that.  They were told to watch English-language media.

Isn't that the same media that has dialed the fear-mongering up to 11?

Yep, that media.  I'll tell you something, it's a disgrace and an outrage the part the US media is playing in sowing further distrust in the Japanese as regards what their government is telling them, simply because the media has its own agenda and little first-hand knowledge.

fyi: What is a "Spent Fuel Pool"?

After the "fuel rod tube" containing the nuclear material has reached its useful life, the stuff needs to be removed from the nuclear reactor and stored pending disposal. It is usually carried on the books of the Power Company as a liability as disposal is costly and time consuming. SO, the stuff has to be stored temporarily on site. The rods are moved to an inert pool of water mainly because the rods give off heat through radiation. They are stored in a giant vat, or "spent fuel pool" on site. The important fact missing in many faux-journalist's assessment: They ain't involved in a nuclear chain reaction. That takes place in the reactor, not in the spent fuel pool.

From our local utility website:

Progress Energy currently uses wet storage pools and dry storage canisters to store spent nuclear fuel. The company has managed used nuclear fuel and other nuclear waste byproducts safely and efficiently for more than 30 years. To date, no permanent used fuel disposal exists because the U.S. government has not fulfilled its commitment to open and operate a permanent spent-fuel repository. Progress Energy customers have contributed more than $660 million to the high-level nuclear waste fund to support the effort to develop a permanent disposal facility.

All used nuclear fuel must be stored in pools for at least five years after it is taken out of reactors. Progress Energy has above-ground storage in use at its Robinson Plant and under construction at its Brunswick Nuclear Plant. The company believes both methods are equally safe and evaluates the safest and most economical solution for each site

Nice.  Want to see confirmation of this, but if true...things will get ugly, fast.

Also, cutting through the MFM hype, Regime noise and cautious Japanese releases...is this latest thing about this being a category 5 nuclear disaster (out of a scale of 7) correct?  Or is this just more noise?

It is really hard to tell just what the hell is going on over there!

I call b.s. on that one. Certainly there have been some deaths, most likely from the hydrogen gas explosions. I'll bet some "journalist"  made a big, fat, erroneous assumption.

All I can say is "I bet the Japanese will
rebuild their devastation long before "WE" finish
Ground Zero." So sad, what have we let happen to
to America? I haven't given up but
realize many of "We The People" have just begun to wake up,
we need many more to see the
"Fundamental Change" the was voted in.
We can undo this in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018
seems like a long time but the Progs have been at this since the 40's
Have heart America, and spread the knowledge.

I don't think this is quite correct. Although it is true that the water functions as a coolant the other equally important function is to block radiation...lots and lots of extremely lethal radiation.

I found posted on Ace this morning a link to a blog that seems to be written by someone that knows what he's talking about in regard to all things nuclear. Worth a look. You can go back many days and read the guy's comments as the events unfold and the MFM spews misleading and false information.
