Black boxes in cars raise privacy concerns

Uhh huh...now, not years ago, privacy is a concern...and people thought what, that the Obama regime would put a stop to this?

I have so got to find and old non-computerized vehicle, I really really do!

GM, I think, was the originator of installing this type of system in vehicles.

I've been watching the gearhead shows again and one of them built a modern GM LS motor with carbs and no computer. Look for old station wagons for cheap car.

We had a spot of almost sunshine today so I took my pickup for a ride. It was a bit cranky from sitting (since mid-September) so I went the long way round to the Post Office to get my mail. Damned thing didn't want to start at the PO. Fiddled with it and got it going again. Took it out for a 10-mile freeway run to loosen her up.

She behaved herself after that but I know that it is time to rebuild the carb (again!).

And that's the thing with old cars - you had better be prepared to either work on them or know someone you trust to work on them. Because compared to today's cars they are high-maintenance. I don't mind and most of it I can do myself (except I suck with transmissions!) and I have a garage to work on her.

Just a couple of little somethings to keep in mind...

If it's going to sit for extended periods, put Stabil in the gas to prevent crap from building up in the carb.

It's that damned 15% ethanol in the gas - it deteriorated every gasket and every hose. I thought I got it all replaced, and I found an ethanol-free gas station, but apparently I still have some gunk in the system.

Normally I run it once or twice a month all winter but I lost the drivers-side glass and don't want to run it in the rain.

It took four months to find suitable replacement glass. I just got the package. Right now I'm reading up on recommended procedures for replacing 70+year old glass (I'd rather not muck up and have to do it over).

Meanwhile I don't mind the cold, but I prefer to spare her from the wet (that's what the company car is for ;-)

Oh, good!  Yah, don't want to muck that up.

It took three tries to get the rear window for the '55.  Even though it was supposed to be gen-u-wine '55 Delray replacement glass, it was too short.  The installer (the interior upholsterer "knew a guy") put it in and then was able to push it right back out from the inside.
