I'm really not a cat person - as in, I despise cats from the deepest place in my gut. But they sure do some curious and playful things. I can understand why people are drawn to them. I'm just not. I know it's my own problem. Perhaps even a deficiency. But it is what it is.

Cute kitty.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Well Cats are the conservatives of the Animal world. They pretty much keep to themselves, don't require you to be home, may not care for you to be around at all really, and are basically independent - or as independent as you can be and still be a pet.  Dogs are like having 3 year olds that just never grow up.  They require constant attention, cant really be left alone for extended periods, and just are more needy animals.  More loving  and faithful for sure,  and way better guards.  I like dogs - especially dogs owned by others.  Don't really want one of my own. There is probably one coming, but he will never get let in the house.

If someone is dedicated getting into your home
a dog in the yard will not stop him, a dog in
the house may.

Cats are relentless killing machines. We have four of them for vermin control at our house. In my opinion, rural living makes a cat (or several) a necessity. We have two dedicated for outdoors (the first line of defense) and two indoors (the cleanup hitters).

If cats could, they would carry and use firearms.
In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

. . . and two indoors (the cleanup hitters).

Now that is some funny stuff . . .
The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living
are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

My Grandma had feral cats in her tumbledown woodshed on her farm for rodent control.  Once, during a rare winter visit (snow in the Appalachian Mountains back then meant you didn't get out for days or even weeks), I took some cornbread and milk out to the cats.  My Grandma had a shyt fit.  "You feed them cats and they won't catch mice!"

I told Pan my story.  I'm a dog person, but get along with all animals:  Ferrets, rabbits, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, etc.  I had a wonderful mutt as a kid.  When I moved to the City I moved in with my friend who had inherited an elderly cat, Belle, from one of his friend's parents.  (They were downsizing from a house to a condo.  The condo only allowed one pet.  The dog went with them and the cat went.)  That was my first time living with a cat, not just visiting.  I was amazed at the difference in the affection level between cats and dogs, but once a cat warms up to you, their PDA is amazing.  Still like dogs, though, I like the physical roughhousing.

They will, though.  Mice are not necessarily a "food" thing to cats.

And I've had dogs that were just as obsessed with vermin as cats. I had a little mixed dachshund who would run down and kill any squirrel, rabbit, or mouse that came in the yard. He would then parade around with it, before depositing it at the doorstep in triumph.

I had a golden retriever whose obsession was turtles. He would saunter up to the back door with slobber dripping out of his mouth where it was wrapped around a box turtle retracted into its shell. I could take the turtle and walk half a mile back into the woods and release it at the creek, and as soon as we let the dog back out he would track immediately to where that exact turtle was and bring it right back. I was always amazed at how effortlessly he could foil our attempts to obscure where the turtle had been freed.

One didn't argue with Grandma.  She had a wooden butter paddle and knew how to use it.

Heh, I would agree.  As a species they seem much more comfortable with predatory action.

Been a dog family a long time, but have my first cat and he's turning 7 this summer, been a learning experience but he has character and likes to curl up in the lap or go do his own thing.  Easy to take care for and I can take off to the lake and not be worried about him while I am gone.

My sister has a really good outdoor cat, he kills little critters all the time and she gets compliments from the neighbors for ridding pests from their yards.  Even in the winter he roams the neighborhood for hours.

Cats are conservatives? I've always thought of them as pussies.
