What's more important?

Paying to prevent this or paying for this person's salary for five years?

But we have "free" healthcare right now so that's something, right?

I cross that bridge about 5-6 times a year. The last time I did was about two months ago. I noted how rutted the roadway was and jarring the expansion joints were. There but for the grace of God...

Washington state at one time had the highest gas taxes in the US. We're still right around the top. But we're also ruled by idiot libruls who think that bullet trains that no one rides are more important than fixing potholes.

So it comes as no surprise that this sort of thing should happen here. I have no doubt that it will again. Mark my words - the moron gubnor will go on the boob-toob and with his serious face (which is indistinguishable from his constipated face) announce an emergency program to investigate how the Republican allowed this to happen (even though they haven't had any measurable power in 30 years).

At least it isn't very high, looks like it a nice level crossing too.  Progressive states often put more emphasis and resources into eco-stupid ideas and other pc crap than actually solving real problems, investing in roads and bridges to them encourages continuing reliance upon the evil internal combustion engine, which they think is the leading cause of pollution, global warming and the raping of the earth.  If people die or get hurt, well, they deserve it.
We are now where The Founders were when they faced despotism.

Now imagine all the welfare money spent to make our enemies feel comfortable and loved even though as we've come to realize, they hate us anyway because we're mean thoughtless and we love Israel more than their moon-god. Most of the money spent in MD from the transportation fund received from the state's ridiculously high gas tax has gone not into repairing the roads but buying new equipment for the mass transit system which of course doesn't carry it's own weight even when it's subsidized by everyone else. ::gaah::
The good Governor, Martin Owe'Malley had no problem reaching into everybody's pockets for a higher gas tax tat progressively gets higher in the coming few years but in the last fiscal year has raised fees on basic MVA services and tolls at bridges and tunnels. So what you say, all of the bridges have already paid for themselves over the years and, and have tolls that were already high enough to cover the basic maintenance and future repairs/upgrades to any of them.

I suppose that if the MTA(mass transit) carved a route for the buses to get to Ocean City, the state's only REAL beach resort, for the dregs of Baltimore to transport their evil onto those that use the resort for the escape from the state's sponsored and subsidized evil of the Baltimore metro area, the rest of MD's motorists wouldn't have to pay such a high increase in taxes.

If you think that's bad, read about the new Rain tax to hit property owners who have large parking facilities. Apartment complexes, shopping and local business owners that own their property are all slated to pay a tax some asshole that will never make any money the old fashion way(you know them as politicians) came up with not to fix problem(the clean up the Chesapeake Bay which get's oodles of money from the Fed government that get's squandered every year) but because they did squander the money and well, they want more thinking their entitled to it.{Boy am I glad I buy gas strategically adn I don't live in that cesspool of liberal common sense.}

Wasn't the American Recovery Act supposed to fix all the roads and bridges?  ::stirpot::  ::cussing::

Yeah, remember how that 800 billion dollar stimulus was going to create millions of jobs and really improve our aging infrastructure? Then they pushed for Stimulus II, which was going to create millions of jobs and really improve our aging infrastructure.

If we had anything like an investigative media in this country, I bet some enterprising chap could dig into previous plans to expand, replace, or refit this (and other) bridges only to find out they were kiboshed due to some environmental impact study or mouthy special interest group.

Some clarifications:

1) The bridge in question did not fail. It was struck by an oversized load on a trailer and that caused the collapse. The bridge was obsolete in that it could be struck by an oversized load. The bridge should have been replaced years ago with a modern design. So although this situation reminds people of the killer bridge collapse in MN there really is very little similarity.

2) The porkulus was sold as money for "shovel ready jobs" which gave the impression that projects such as upgrading bridges like this one would naturally be done. We, the people, were given the impression that the porkulus was going to do "big" things such as were done during the Great Depression years...things such as Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate bridge. Instead, the money was doled out to unions as a way of rewarding them for voting correctly and, of course, to funnel a certain percentage of that cash back to the Democrat party in the form of union campaign contributions.

3) I will also note here (because, why not?) that I have also driven over this very bridge on at least two occasions that I can remember. It was close to thirty years ago but I did it.

But, as these points indicate, it really does come down to spending taxpayer money to do this or to do that. Sadly, our stupid ass government has chosen to keep some people on the payroll who are not qualified to wipe their own asses rather than fix and upgrade things that taxpayers can actually benefit from.
