In our home, the Christmas Season begins today (Thanksgiving)
« on: November 28, 2013, 01:39:09 PM »
Something about Thanksgiving puts our family into the Christmas spirit. Beginning with the preparation of our Thanksgiving feast, and ending reluctantly after New Years Day, we are very oriented to Christmas, both in the Christian sense, and the cultural sense.

So, I was delighted to come across this video of "The Little Drummer Boy" being sung A Cappella by a very talented group of young people...

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Most. Excellent!  Just enough "warble", not too much.  Thank you, IDP.

Yes, we too start Christmas at Thanksgiving; the turkey tablecloth comes off after dinner, the Christmas one goes on.

I agree wholeheartedly!

But what is "warble"?

That's a nice video. The Youth Pastor @ our church put it up on FB a few days ago & my daughter, especially, has been playing it several times a day - hinting that we should buy the CD.

I agree wholeheartedly!

But what is "warble"?

I think (but of course Pan can speak for herself) IIRC, she has referred to this before, and IIRC, she's referring to the common practice of incessant extraneous vocal flourishes that depart from the song's known melody. For instance, turning the word "free" in the national anthem from one held note into 2 dozen notes, and thinking you're so cool for doing it.

Am I close?

Right on the money.  There's a word for it, I don't recall what it is.  I figured you'd know?

I think I found the word:  melisma

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=melisma

Quote
Singing more than one note on a single syllable. To be used in moderation. Abused to the point of absurdity by R'n'B and pop singers (usually but not always female) as a way of showing off vocal capabilities, much like an Yngwie Malmsteen solo. {Who? - P.}  Egregious offenders include Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, and Boyz II Men.

Sometimes called runs, or vocal runs.
Quit with the melisma, bitch! "Yeah" does not have 23 syllables!

Malmsteen is a guitar picker. Pretty good, but it's not really my style. You can do a youtube search to check him out.

I think Christmas started at this house a couple weeks ago.
My wife is addicted to all the Christmas chick flicks on Hallmark and Lifetime.

Occasionally, I have to suffer through one

As I write this I am sitting in a deer blind in south central Texas waiting for a buck (or maybe a feral hog) to walk in front of my rifle.

No wife.

No child.

Just me and the rifle.

Very peaceful.

If the boss deems it necessary to start Christmas, I'll bet you'll be jumping through the hoops to get Christmas ready.  ::unknowncomic::
