I have a brother who lives in Ca.  I can't convince him to leave.  He likes the weather.   

And another who wants to move back there!!

If I could find a job that pays what I make here in Ca. I'd be willing to move, but even my employer pays those of us in Ca, better (10-25%) than employees at sites elsewhere in the US.  And I really do like the weather.

But how much of that higher pay is taken in the form of taxes? Could it be a wash in a lower tax jurisdiction?
It's a shame CA is so beautiful, actually. They're ruining every other aspect of the place.

Based on past experience, I would say that's it.  Any national company has different base-pay for high/low tax states and cities, which is why so many with MCI and IBM willingly moved to NC from NY/NJ.  Salaries were lower, but it was better than a wash in many cases, particularly when it came to house values; sell at the going (high) rate up north, bring the money here and get a McMansion, often for less and with lower property taxes.  O' course, this is how the real estate prices were driven up here, but every feature also has a bug.

I once worked for a company with offices in CA.  They actually paid you less if you transferred to San Diego from outside of CA because they had so many requests for transfers there.

I lived in SD for a year .. MEH.

Yes, the weather was nice. Ocean is still too cold to go in  without a wet suit  for much of the year, and the people were all pretty much selfish, self indulgent liberals who live there because it makes them fell superior for having chosen such a wonderful place.  And they cared more about their cars than they did their kids. Traffic was always awful.
Yeah, its fun to visit, but no, I wouldn't live there on purpose again.

Temps been rather cold 5 of the last 6 weeks,  night time temps in the 35-45F range and daily highs between 55-75.  Lots of rain.  Did I mention I hate rain as much as Trap hates hippies.

If I want play in the snow, Arrowhead and Big Bear are only a couple of hours away.

One of the good things about Colorado is "winter" often means 3 days of snow, all of which melts in the next 3 days because its bright, sunny and 60 degrees.  The Cabin at 9000 feet still has some, but even there its been a dry winter so far.
Don't really have "fall" here usually at least not how Easterners understand it. .  The first snow is usually on Halloween night, and fall consists of about 2-4 weeks of colorful leaves that promptly leave their perches.  Same thing with Spring really.

I find the area along the NC/TN border suits me. It's in the south but is significantly cooler. Winter is similar to the Great Lakes region (they even get lake effect snow out of Lake Michigan). Summer seldom gets above 80 and the humidity is much lower than the surrounding region.

Cold winter is a natural deterrent to human garbage. When the collapse happens the warm parts of the country are going to have more of a problem with feral humans.
