I found a couple slavic folk groups I like. They might be Polish. Some of these norse folk groups have too much metal IMO. Not these.

Dziwoludy is one

I like the lyrics to Matty Groves. I came to this classic song via the Slavic folk singers and Gingertail but the words are not clear from them.

https://youtu.be/1it7BP5PckI

Many versions it seems
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matty_Groves

Song by Fairport Convention
OverviewVideosLyricsOther recordingsListen
Lyrics
A holiday, a holiday
And the first one of the year
Lord Donald's wife came into the church
The gospel for to hear

And when the meeting, it was done
She cast her eyes about
And there she saw little Matty Groves
Walking in the crowd

"Come home with me, little Matty Groves
Come home with me tonight
Come home with me, little Matty Groves
And sleep with me 'til light"

"Oh, I can't come home, I won't come home
And sleep with you tonight
By the rings on your fingers
I can tell you are Lord Donald's wife"

"But if I am Lord Donald's wife
Lord Donald's not at home
He is out in the far cornfields
Bringing the yearlings home"

And a servant who was standing by
And hearing what was said
He swore Lord Donald he would know
Before the sun would set

And in his hurry to carry the news
He bent his breast and ran
And when he came to the broad mill stream
He took off his shoes and he swam

Little Matty Groves, he lay down
And took a little sleep
When he awoke, Lord Donald
Was standing at his feet

Saying, "How do you like my feather bed
And how do you like my sheet?
How do you like my lady
Who lies in your arms asleep?"

"Oh well, I like your feather bed
And well, I like your sheets
But better I like your lady gay
Who lies in my arms asleep"

"Well, get up, get up", Lord Donald cried
"Get up as quick as you can
It'll never be said in fair England
I slew a naked man"

"Oh, I can't get up, I won't get up
I can't get up for my life
For you have two long beaten swords
And I not a pocket knife"

"Well, it's true I have two beaten swords
And they cost me deep in the purse
But you will have the better of them
And I will have the worse"

"And you will strike the very first blow
And strike it like a man
I will strike the very next blow
And I'll kill you if I can"

So Matty struck the very first blow
And he hurt Lord Donald sore
Lord Donald struck the very next blow
And Matty struck no more

And then Lord Donald he took his wife
And he sat her on his knee
Saying, "Who do you like the best of us
Matty Groves or me?"

And then up spoke his own dear wife
Never heard to speak so free
"I'd rather a kiss from dead Matty's lips
Than you or your finery"

Lord Donald, he jumped up
And loudly he did bawl
He struck his wife right through the heart
And pinned her against the wall

"A grave, a grave", Lord Donald cried
"To put these lovers in
But bury my lady at the top
For she was of noble kin"

A cool story I had kinda heard about. The Finnish group Nightwish had been having trouble with their lead singer who good but not great. They were in Denver in 2012 and she got real sick. The group who opened for them was Kamelot and they had two female lead singers

They gave the crowd a choice. Cancel the concert and refund money. Or have the crowd sing many of the songs plus have the two female singers do their best. The crowd voted the later. One of the singers sort of knew some of the songs as she had auditioned a while back. The other knew none of the songs. They had 55 minutes to learn the show as best they could. They were given sheet music to take on stage.

A very memorable show for the fans.

The next show on tour was in Salt Lake City where the regular singer did the show. They asked a Finnish singer Floor Jansen to fly in and learn the show for Seattle in 48 hours which she did. They fired the regular singer.

I found another Slavic folk band. This one Russian, not Polish. Otava Yo. They can fill larger venues than the others maybe because they are in St. Petersburg. They toured other countries.

I don't much like metal but folk metal and symphonic metal can be OK. I do not like tattoos on women.
I came across this video clip comparing pop and metal female singers.
IMO some pop singers are good but they sing crappy popular songs.

I learned that when Nightwish dropped off a demo tape so that Tarja could sing to it they did not realize she was classically trained. They changed from acoustic to metal as she was over powering the  band.

I linked to Simone and Floor. Why metal heads dislike pop. The whole 4 min clip is good.

Life is like an RPG: if you're a Dutch Woman, you got a +15 in singing (Charlotte Wessels, Sharon den Adel, Simone Simons, Floor Jansen, Diane van Giersbergen etc)

There is another cute clip I did not know about. They do a monthly poll on favorite female metal singer. Floor Jansen jumped from around 13th Aug 2012 to 1st Sep 2012. Nightwish fired their lead singer due to some feud and told Floor Jansen in NL she had 48 hours to learn the set for a Sep 2012 Seattle concert.

Yeah, more of the same mostly. I really like this musician but the costume play  ("cosplay") is not not my thing.  She often dresses up as one of the players in the video game or anime she is playing the music from. Maybe for younger folk.

She has a new camera operator and camera. Maybe that is part of it now. IMO the video part is awesome. Apparently her character was in the final battle of this video game, looks pretty beat up, and goes back for more. Her blind rescue cat  she named Illidan co-stars.

I like this reviewer the best. Opera singer and teacher. Very technical. I have never seen her so giddy as in this review. The lyrics re good.

Here is the  original song Meat Loaf, Meat Loaf (with Ellen Foley)

I first heard Meat Loaf in "Kickapoo" by Tenacious D, and fell in love with his theatrics and precise singing style. Learning about his theater background, and listening to "Bat Out Of Hell" and "I Would Do Anything For Love", it's not surprising that our Patrons got another one on the list for me to check out.  And I'm totally here for it. . . or I was?

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Meat Loaf performing "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" for the first time.

More history than music. I do not really like most metal. The Netherlands is a very creative place and always has been thanks to the influence of so many nationalities and the history of trade.

However, metal often has great female singers. There are maybe 50 reaction videos to Floor Jansen alone. Opera singers and vocal coaches go nuts and some start crying.

I knew that recently there are lots of symphonic metal groups with female lead singers (so called front women) but I did not know the history and they they started in the Netherlands with this woman Anneke van Giersbergen'. I saw her maybe 10 years ago on a 2008 concert DVD but did not know who she was.

Here she is in 1996. She is called the mother of all metal front women

Anneke was the girlfriend every metalhead wanted back in the day. And still she is.

Here she is in the 2008 concert DVD. Now I know why the crowd liked her in her one song, Somewhere.

A former opera singer does review/reaction videos which are introducing me or re-introducing me to some good songs or vocals. A post at ACOC long ago indirectly introduced me to symphonic metal and now I am listening to some very good vocals. I know there is more to music than technically good vocals.

Here is Floor Jansen singing some opera song years ago. She is currently lead singer for Nightwish. Huge in EU but not known as much in US. In EU they can fill large stadiums.

Floor Jansen - Puccini: O mio babbino caro - De Tiende van Tijl

Here are two other lead singers cooperating on a song. Tarja is on the left and Sharon on the right. Tarja was the first singer for Nightwish and also sings classical. Sharon is the lead singer for Within Temptation. Tarja is Finnish and Floor and Sharon are Dutch.

They don't make metal head bangers like they used to. The Dutch are famously tall. She says she is just over 6 foot tall So she wears heels on stage?

I will find the eng subtitles later.  she won some singing contest where the judges can't see her until they turn round.

update:

I found this mix of her singing the song Cuckoo. One wearing a jumper/overalls is when she won some singing contest where the judges can't see her until they turn round. The other later version is without judges where she wears a vest. There is Eng subtitles. I think the song was written by a Russian.

Finally another version. I believe where she is grown up???

I get  fed more Russian music videos now. I cannot understand the words but they re OK. It seems there was/is a Russian Group "Green Crow" that translated and sang lots of folk and Irish songs. Some drinking songs. Then lots of Russian singers picked up on these songs.
some are kinda cute.

I heard of Nightwish long ago but do not like metal much so I passed. I recently heard more about Floor Jansen and overcame some of the anti-metal bias. She just had her second child with the drummer from Sabaton.  She is Dutch, the group is Finnish, and she  lives in Sweden.

I saw an interview with her patents:
Q. When Floor was little did you think she would someday be the lead singer of such a famous group? [They fill stadiums around the world, not in US]
A. Yes.

Here is a sample with a clickbait title.

For me this song is from Simon and Garfunkel and was in the Graduate soundtrack. This is a different arrangement that seemed odd at first.  I like the visuals.
Turns out this song is very old. The dress is from some Chinese company Linennaive. They make a line of unusual clothing

I am not a gamer and never played Diablo but I know some who did. I understand it is a very old game.
Alina plays a cover of a song from the game. Lots of people really like her cover. There is a shrill sound when the ocarina plays. People say that was in the original sound track.  The original music in the game was played on a 12 string guitar.

She apparently dressed up as Diablo characters.

You even got the part at 01:43. Just masterful. This is a very important song to a lot of people, and you absolutely did it justice, then elevated it and made it your own. You captured all the little nuances. This is the best cover of Tristram I've ever heard.
