Pfft.  He had a lot in common with them, commie sympathizer that he was.

True 'nuff...but he was hijacked by those who saw an opportunity to exploit their own people by embracing LBJ's new plantation scheme...

How different might that result have been if King had lived and rejected LBJ's scheme at least politically and operated independently from that party?  A direction I think that always attracted him.

Plus, just because my mind works this way...who stood to benefit the most by King being removed?  LBJ, certainly.  Those "leaders" thrusting themselves into the vacuum for personal gain and being the trustee of LBJ, I say yes.

An independent MLK would have checked the Democrat Plantation scheme, it would have created a new challenge and it is not certain the old guard GOP would have had the sense to let actions speak rather than pandering and tossed dollars...but it would have at least decoupled the automaton default in that community still dominating today, and in time, who knows maybe a healthy majority of that community would have reached actual awareness.

Anyway, it's all backwash at this point...

Thankfully the virtue-signalling was modest this year. Hopefully it will eventually take its rightful place....in the dustbin of history.
