Minneapolis 'uptown' area declines
« on: January 10, 2025, 11:21:45 AM »
I have not been there in a long time. It used to be a 'hip' area not too fr from lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles.
I used to live 2 blocks from Lake and Hennepin.
In short, businesses are leaving because of crime. A Dollar Store left because of shoplifting.
The city OKed building a temporary housing for homeless who were discharged from hospitals.
A hardware store was allowed to stop paying rent but even then could not survive.

Hive of hippies and counter-culture rot...

Never cared for it...never patronized it...

Even when I used to fish Harriet back as a young lad, never hung around...

And like most of the greater city...it's all going to Hell, why anybody stays there and pays ridiculous taxes is a sign of idiocy...and it cannot ever get better as the leadership will never get better...

Long ago uptown used to be nice.  Nice bars and restaurants. There was a Rainbow foods close by. There was even a hardware store that seemed out of place and it later left. There was a movie theater. Also a bar that played live music. That was decades ago. I could bike around the lakes. I even ran around the lakes when i was fit. Record store. Bakery I think.
There was an unnatural lack of bars once south of Lake on Hennepin. Zoning I think.

There were freaky types that hung out at McDonalds but they were harmless. I think they were called "McPunks."

There is an auto repair place named Garcias in New Brighton on old Hwy 8.  Garcia used to be on Lake street but the place near him got burned to the ground in the riots so he moved.

Not sure for that area. Much has to do with the lack of enforcement of criminal activity. Liberal city govt.

The videos show lots of drug dealers all over the place. Not sure how close the riots came to uptown.  When even a dollar store cannot make it due to shoplifting what can you say/

Going back decades lots of black moved here from Chicago in part due to better living and better welfare. Also the drug market was wide open and  not competitive so prices were higher than Chicago. It was called "Moneyapolis". Drug gang turf was not settled so there were gang wars. Then it was called "murderapolis."

I am not sure how black the uptown area was.

Very close.  I worked with a guy then that lived there...worked from home, would say he heard shots while we were on conference calls and you could pick up sirens sometimes...

He subsequently left for work out East somewhere...  Jersey maybe...  Hilarious, leave Minnesota for Jersey!  Probably doesn't happen too often...  Maybe not true anymore...

I read somewhere it was the elimination of a lot of parking to accommodate new bus lanes, an explosion in urban campers, and shoplifting/stealing which doesn't get punished in that s**thole, anymore.

Yeah, like Bike-Lane-Betsy...

Anytime you make things harder mobility-wise, you create less mobile captive populations...and certain types, let us say types favored by urban leftists, exploit this for their own benefit...and then the death-spiral into oblivion really picks up steam...
