Title: More CA fires

I contend CA in general is one immense man-made disaster area...

Hard to feel sorry for these idiots...their fire management practices are dominated by eco-nazi idiocy, there is at least one fire captain talking more about her LGBTQWERTY pride than fire-fighting,...

Leftists make everything worse....  Always have, always will...

This is Bowdoin St in Pacific Palisades. Every home is on fire. Crews aren’t trying to save them. They’re trying to put out flames before they ignite other neighborhoods.

And how many helicopters government and private owned are in the area?  Cannot there be a staging point of various sized buckets that can be quickly attached?  Got a big ass ocean right there folks could scoup water and drop on fires.  These people are not leaders in anything except failure.

Thanks for all the posts. I will likely read most of them.

I used to work in Burnsville overlooking the river to the north. There were marshy areas with cat tails etc. In the spring they were dried out and RR tracks led to the coal fired power station. Train sparks would set it on fire. It was entertaining  to watch the fire fighting. I only recall the helicopters with  buckets. Also planes. There was some auto dealer just west of I-35W  they had to protect.

The black turned to green real quick later in the spring.

Know exactly where that is...had to go that way to Elko or visit folks down that way I know...

I recall a fire when I was a youth behind some old apartments that used to be next to an old radio station (WAYL) off Old 8 just a bit north of Foss road that raged in a field between the apartments and the Hwy 88 trunk and a pond bordering the south end...we used to roam all over and in this area the grass and cattails were so high, great place to stage army games with kids...stalk fox...anyway the area was low-lying, the 3rd floor of the apartments were just about even with Old 8...forget how it started but the flames were about 30-40' higher than the apartment buildings roof...FD had to attack it from two sides to quash.

Saw a controlled house burn off Silver Lake Road by the old Apache Plaza once too, practice for the FD on a condemned house..that was neat to watch.

- Her family donates HUGE amounts of money to Democrats
- She donated to stop Gavin Newsom’s recall
- They use over 150 billion gallons of water every year
- Her family was in the 1994 secret meeting that officially ended water being a public right in California
- They're the largest agricultural owners in California, and their farms use more water than all homes in Los Angeles combined
- Lynda and Stewart Resnick own Fiji Water, POM Pomegranate Juice, Wonderful Pistachios, and many other food companies
- They've faced lawsuits related to their water management practices, with allegations of profiting from selling water stored in the Kern Water Bank to non-members at a profit, violating public utility laws
- The Resnicks have been accused of using their wealth to influence water policy and politics

A prescribed burn highlighted on the agenda of a women’s firefighting conference, held to promote “diversity and inclusion” in a male-dominated field, didn’t go well.

Accidentally setting Banff National Park ablaze wasn’t part of the plan.

The prescribed burn was carried out in Compound Meadows, adjacent to the Banff townsite, by Parks Canada and participants in Canada’s first-ever Women-in-Fire Training Exchange (WTREX).

Firefighters

It raged out of control Wednesday forcing the temporary evacuation of horses from the Banff Light Horse Association and hundreds of area residents and tourists in the Rocky Mountain Resort.

Interchanges were closed. Traffic was backed up on the Trans Canada Hwy. A cemetery was threatened. Trees were scorched. Billows of smoke that could be seen in Canmore polluted and clouded the air.

Three tack sheds went up in flames. Heirloom saddles and chaps belonging to one family were destroyed.

The calvary was called in to help fight the blaze.

Five helicopters raining down buckets of water, firefighters from both Banff and Canmore, Alberta Wildlife, and RCMP were needed to help Parks Canada and WTREX participants stop the fire from spreading further, control the traffic situation, and help with evacuation efforts.

By Saturday, the fire that spread three hectares beyond the predetermined boundary was classified as “being held” while crews worked to snuff out hot spots.

It was updated to “under control” Sunday morning.

In short, there are some fire-boats in LA and the Port of LA? There is no reason not to use them and seawater can be used to fight such fires.  The also have manifolds that be hooked up to large hoses to feed on shore hoses. They put out huge quantities of water.

SF has two systems of fire hydrants one is shared with other water sources. The other has fatter hydrants and is on a separate loop. If the second system runs out of water they can use seawater.

The last major reservoir built in California was New Melones Lake, completed in 1979.
SFGATE
Since then, no significant reservoirs have been constructed in the state. However, plans are underway for the Sites Reservoir, a large off-stream reservoir proposed in the 1950s. After decades of planning and environmental reviews, construction is scheduled to begin in 2024, with completion expected by 2030.

The pop grew from 23 M to 39M today since that reservoir was built.

Yes, in 2014, California voters approved Proposition 1, a $7.5 billion water bond that allocated $2.7 billion specifically for the public benefits of new water storage projects, including reservoirs.
California Globe

This funding aimed to support the construction of several new reservoirs to enhance the state's water storage capacity.

Among the projects considered for funding under Proposition 1 were:

Sites Reservoir: A proposed off-stream reservoir in the Sacramento Valley, with an estimated cost of $4.4 billion.
    CalMatters

Temperance Flat Dam: A proposed dam on the San Joaquin River, intended to create a reservoir with a capacity of 1.26 million acre-feet.
    Wikipedia

Pacheco Reservoir Expansion: A project to expand the existing Pacheco Reservoir from 5,500 acre-feet to 140,000 acre-feet, with costs rising to approximately $2.5 billion.
    Wikipedia

Despite the approval of Proposition 1 in 2014, as of early 2025, no new major reservoirs have been completed in California. Projects like the Sites Reservoir are still in the planning and approval stages, with construction expected to begin in 2024 and completion targeted for 2030.
Wikipedia

The delay in constructing new reservoirs has been attributed to various factors, including environmental concerns, regulatory hurdles, and funding challenges.
California Globe

In summary, while Proposition 1 provided funding for new water storage projects, including reservoirs, the construction of these facilities has faced significant delays, and as of now, no new major reservoirs have been built in California since the bond's approval.

Adding 4 to 5 million acre-feet to 50 million acre-feet represents an approximate 8-10% increase in California's total reservoir capacity.

Lenin's belief in the central importance of electrification to the achievement of communism is represented by his statement: Communism is Soviet power plus the electrification of the whole country.

I wonder what the further consequences of the CA fires will be?

People were leaving CA before the fires. Often rich people who pay the most taxes.
How much will property tax revenue drop? What is the value of a plot of land with no house and a burnt house to be removed?

If the coastal commission takes years to grant building permits where will the rich people live for years? Why not leave the state?
If they took 3 years to grant a permit before how long now when 100x more permits are needed?

Where will building materials and labor come from all at once to rebuild?

Also I just heard that the LA mayor granted more money to the LAPD to clear out homeless maybe from some downtown areas to outer areas including the burned area. Homeless often build fires for heat and cooking.

Example:

A $10 million ocean-view property might break down as follows:
        Land: $7 million (70%)
        Home: $3 million (30%)

Important Notes:

Land-to-structure value ratios in Malibu can vary significantly between properties, so these figures are averages.
In extreme cases (e.g., vacant lots with spectacular views), the land value could represent nearly 100% of the property’s worth.

Property taxes in California are based on the assessed value of the property, and Proposition 13 caps the general property tax rate at 1% of the assessed value. Additionally, local taxes and assessments typically add 0.25% to 0.5%, bringing the total effective property tax rate in Malibu to around 1.1% to 1.5%.

Earlier he says that the fuel density is now 5x that of earlier years.

https://youtu.be/vda9aFhBrjI

Around 30 min in he says that 60 percent of CA forest is federal and has been off limits to logging for years. The logging roads served as firebreaks but no longer. He also said that the logging companies had to clear under power lines as part of the deal.

He also said that people wanting to clear brush in the canyons had to do studies and pay lawyers and can be held up by any of several agencies.

Some or all of the outside firefighters coming  in had to go to Sacramento to get papers to allow them to fire fight.

This 1962 documentary film produced by the Los Angeles Fire Department, describes the historic Bel Air / Brentwood wildfire that started on November 5, 1961 in the Bel Air community of Los Angeles. Over the course of three days, the wind-driven fire destroyed 484 homes, damaged 190 others, and burned over 16,000 acres. Amazingly, there was no loss of life attributable to the blaze.

The then $30 million disaster led to new laws in the City of Los Angeles to eliminate wood shingle roofs, and to clear dry brush away from homes. The film is narrated by actor William Conrad.

I found it funny that the old left (USSR) was all about industrialization and the new left is against it but expects electricity to come from the wall receptacles. Ayn Rand was ahead of her time in writing about this long ago.

Hmmm
The concentration of wealth in Pacific Palisades is high. According to IRS data analyzed by JPM, the average home in the area is valued at $3.5 million, yet more than half of tax returns report an adjusted gross income under $200,000. In Altadena, where the average home value exceeds $1.2 million, over 80% of tax filings show incomes below $200,000, with more than 60% reporting less than $100,000.

"Construction costs will be lower than home values though: in 2019, Redfin estimated that land value was 60% of the price of a home in Los Angeles, the highest share among any major metro area," the analysts pointed out.

I heard that CA has a home insurance of last resort called FAIR but it costs a lot. I heard it has reserves of 200 to 300M.

As of 2022, the combined annual cost of a FAIR Plan policy and a supplemental Difference in Conditions (DIC) policy averaged around $3,200.

In some high-risk areas, homeowners have reported annual premiums exceeding $12,000, reflecting the increased risk and limited availability of coverage options.

So the reason for the Palisades  reservoir being empty was to repair a tear in the cover so it was shut down for 11 months since Feb last year. Also some pilot flew over the reservoir a couple weeks before the fires with cameras and showed it was empty

In CA they started building a RR from nowhere to nowhere. They could have built it out from SF to start to lower rents but that would lower SF real estate prices so no way.

In MPLS are there was a proposal to build a toll road from Eden prairie  to the SW. I know a guy who lived in Eden Prairie who was  involved in the effort to  kill this bc it would lower EP house prices. The existing roads going to SW are not so good.
