The only sensible conclusion as far as I'm concerned is that the Pakistanis knew exactly what it was and were tacitly protecting its residents by allowing it to be so close to their own facilities.

Another thought about the noise, noise suppressors and surprise.  There may not have been as much clatter as I originally speculated.  Is that sound suppression of rotors a movie accessory or a reality?

I have no idea how rotor tips breaking the sound barrier could be suppressed.

Firearms suppression is not much of a factor either. The silencing helps more with preventing the enemy from acquiring your position than it does toward any stealth capability.

The twitter account posted by a local guy in Pakistan attests to how damn loud everything was. Once the Special Forces arrived it was noisy.

It is unclear whether the tape is audio or video, but a U.S. official says that intelligence indicates it is already working its way through al-Qaida's media pipeline. The official said the timing was coincidental and there is no indication he knew U.S. forces were bearing down on him.

A new recording from bin Laden would provide a final word from the beyond grave for a terrorist who taunted the U.S. with recorded propaganda for years. It could also provide fodder to those who insist he is still alive.

So it isn't really the final video. Maybe someday...I would pay good money for the head cam vid.

I don't know if helicopter silencing is real or not either. I suppose it's possible to engage a quietER mode, maybe by adjusting the blades' angle of attack or some such, but I doubt it would make much difference at close range. A big portion of the noise of helicopters comes from the tail rotor and the intersection of sound waves between it and the main rotor. Some of the tailless designs can probably be made pretty stealthy, but AFAIK these were good old Blackhawk choppers.

Muslim clerics are predicting revenge attacks against American targets because of the way the government decided to dispose of the leader's body.

A wide range of Islamic scholars interpreted it as a humiliating disregard for the standard Muslim practice of placing the body in a grave with the head pointed toward the holy city of Mecca.

Well if we'd followed their example, he wouldn't have had a head to point towards Mecca. If it makes them feel any better, they can imagine that he will soon be distributed amongst several shark turds pointing towards Mecca.

That's a good point pan. I think an honest look at how best to make war against islam would lead any sane person to conclude that we should piss all over the very notion that they adhere to a religion we recognize as legitimate, and go from there.

'Islam is a reliigion of peace'.  That utterance by Bush may yet be fatal to us.

In the immediate wake of 9/11, I wish Bush had stuck to his Constitutional role of Commander-in-Chief and stayed out of the theology quicksand as pontificating on islamic theological fine points were not part of his presidential job description.  It's very difficult for those in political power to accept we are engaged in a religious war, as it only takes one side to declare religious war.  Islam has declared war on us, but we are not at war with islam.  How's that dichotomy working our for us?
