🔸On Monday, several Western media outlets reported that
Houthis may sabotage Western internet cables in the Red Sea;
🔸In fact, no Ansar Allah officials posed the threat, the Houthis have never mentioned such a possibility;
🔸Telecom firms linked to the UN-recognised Yemeni government have said they fear Houthis may destroy a network of submarine cables in the Red Sea;
🔸Moammar Al-Eryani, the Aden-based government's minister for information, culture and tourism, last week posted the statement to X following an analysis published in the US-backed 'Gulf International Forum' with several maps of undersea global internet cables;
🔸At the end of January, DC-based Askari Defense & Intelligence described undersea cables as the Houthi's "next casualty";
🔸In December, Yemen's Houthi-led Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology debunked the so-called threats reported in the media;
How are global internet traffic and the Red Sea connected? (part 2)
🔸The Red Sea carries about 17% of the world’s internet traffic along fibre pipes. Sixteen major submarine cables pass through the Red Sea before crossing by land through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea, effectively connecting Europe to Asia;🔸Over 90% of them (25,000km) are carried by cables in the Red Sea area. The cables at some points run at a depth of 100 metres. These cables are often no thicker than a hosepipe and susceptible to damage from ships’ anchors and earthquakes;
🔸The cables referred to in the claim are submarine communications cables laid on the seabed which carry telecommunications signals to different regions;
🔸In 2013, near the port of Alexandria, three divers cut an underwater cable that provided internet connectivity between Egypt and Europe. The sabotage caused traffic to drop by 60%.Boost us! (
