http://www.france24.com/en/20121015-us-meningitis-cases-climb-205-outbreak-worsens

I'm hearing this story reported on almost every radio news-break, every day.  As of today, 15 people have died, so the death-count is apparently a subject of interest.

Why?

It's not an "outbreak", or an epidemic, in the true sense of the word because this form of meningitis is not contagious.

Maybe they are just testing this method to figure out if its a viable method to introduce the real contagion

Maybe, but I don't see why they would.  What we're talking about here is injections of steroids for back pain.  Although it's voluntary, it's limited in terms of population.  I'd figure they'd have better "results" if they used flu shots instead.

It's a mild outbreak of "Big Pharma" they're massaging 0
the story in order to discover how to be most affective.

I never get a flu shot and I am not getting sick more (actually less) than those who do.  I always wonder if getting it is preparing people for something else, then next thing you know a mutation hits the vaccine and its zombieland.  Or maybe they get innoculated?

I never get a flu shot and I don't get sick any more often than anybody else, and I know people who've gotten a flu shot who get the flu anyway.

I figure why bother.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

It's said *ahem* that for those who got the shot and got the flu anyway that the severity and duration was reduced.

I've gotten one injection, some several years ago.  Now that I'm immune-compromised, never again.

The high school near me is having a day where you can get a flu shot for free!  Free!  I mean they're practically giving them away now anyway--Walgreens, CVS, etc -- is there really anyone who wants one who can't get one?

My dh went to his followup with his doc after his stroke.  He got a flu shot.  Why?? He's not "at risk".  I said you know how I feel about that!  He said I know but I was there and doc said I should so I did.  Lame.  I said next year when you go to your checkup he'll tell you to get it again.  It used to be for infants and old folks and at risk people.  Now it's everyone!

When I brought home my preemie baby I was told the entire family needed to get a flu shot to protect her and despite my uneasiness I did it for a couple of winters.  Haven't since.

I just find this whole attitude that you're a responsible adult so you MUST get a flu shot is weird.  Kind of like you're a woman so you must have your contraceptives free.

I hate seeing the signs for flu shots.

Everywhere has them available.  Walked into Walmart and there's a table to get one.  One of the sports teams my kid was on offered them to everyone after a practice one day.  Give me a break.

Like the flu is the most important health issue we face.

Nanny-state, LV.  That's how it strikes me, and ignorantly pointless as well, considering this year's flu shots are formulated to fight last year's flu strain.

Yep.

But try telling someone that who thinks they're morally superior to you because they dutifully get theirs every year.

Probably the same ones who think the TSA protects them from terrorists.

I used to get them every year, but haven't for the past few years. I never got the flu when vaccinated, but I never got it before or after either. In fact, I'm not sure if I've ever truly had the flu. I've had sicknesses worse than a simple cold, but nothing like the 2 weeks of misery people describe the flu to be.

For now I am going with the theory that an immune system needs practice. Best to not let it get soft and flabby :)

Heard a local clown talk about this on the radio this morning, I guess this is the mother of all moonbat conspiracy theories - Plant X/Nibiru - supposedly a rogue planet we cannot see except when it disturbs the orbit of Uranus or some such nonesense...the radio clown liked it in that it is being used to explain the large ammo purchases by DHS, building of detention centers, all the SkyNet/BigBrother BS.

Yeah, OK, I think I would have to choke down copious quantities of kick-ass chiba to come to that conclusion instead of something more grounded like the government really is out to get us.

Frankly, these Planet Xer's need to pull their head out and see the real danger all around them!

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Officials say a vial containing a virus that can cause hemorrhagic fever has gone missing from a research facility in Galveston, but say there's no reason to believe there's a threat to the public.

Wonderful. Just wonderful. Oh, wait...

"Officials" say there's no threat to the public. Whew. Thank God for those officials.
