ouch!!!

I live in Northern NY just off of Lake Ontario and we get quite a bit of Ice and snow here, we are used to it, but we are also the home of Fort Drum and we have come to see that many of the soldiers and their family members come from southern states, so when we see vehicles on cold icy mornings with southern plates, we stay way far away as there is plenty of slipping and sliding when they hit the roads... It takes a learned skill to walk or drive on ice and your video should be shown to all newcomers to our area as how not to drive or walk on ice.

Go to the Appalachian mountains in the South. It's the South, but with northern winters. My place in the NC mountains near the TN border averages about 100 inches of snow per year.

If it ever dries out here, I need to get more firewood onto the back porch so it's covered and out of the weather.

It's real convenient on our back porch, right next to the door into the house. We don't use the porch in the winter, but it would still have tons of room to do whatever.

I was lucky to have a big basement where I kept half my winter heating and fireplace wood at a time, and that was 4 cords for the first half and later on I brought in the rest so it was nice and dry and close at hand.

I was lucky to have a big basement where I kept half my winter heating and fireplace wood at a time, and that was 4 cords for the first half and later on I brought in the rest so it was nice and dry and close at hand.

My BIL's neighbor, south of Buffalo, NY, has a 12' high basement ceiling and firewood is stacked floor to ceiling in most of the basement. 'Course, he has entire trees delivered to him by flatbed, and a sawmill and splitter powered by a 6-cylinder Chevy engine.

He uses only wood to heat his house all winter.

My BIL has a pipeline running through his property, and he gets as much free natural gas as he can use for as long as hives there. The gas, however, is NOT odorized.

He also uses a lot of wood to heat his home. He is on 45 acres of heavily wooded forests, with cherry trees over 100' tall. Once in a while he contacts the Amish, who bring in their hand saws, axes, hatchets, buggies and horses/wagons to haul out the tree trunks. They cut off all the limbs, and he uses them for firewood.

The Amish sell the trees to be shipped to Spain for furniture.

Not odorized?  That could be dangerous!   ::speechless::

I remember my fathers old house had a leak, turns out it was outside, the big bell valve worked itself loose over time...I smelled it downstairs...when the gas man came to check it out it turns out the leak from outside pooled in the cold air and sunk through the foundation brick and into the basement...not enough to ignite but enough to smell.  The guy had to get the biggest pipe wrech I ever saw in my life and put a big metal pole on the end to get it to tighten down.

All I could think of is what a nightmare if that slacker kid that lived next door came walking between the houses like he often did each day smoking a cig and flicked that butt anywhere near that corner of the house!

Gotta have that smell, or you could miss a leak easy!

His gas comes straight from the well.

A natural gas leak is nowhere as dangerous as an LP leak. Natural gas is lighter than air and will go up the flue and chimney out of the building (assuming it's not a MAJOR leak). LP is heavier than air and will form explosive puddles on the floors or elsewhere where it's low, and then BOOM! The LP can explode from a very minor leak over time.

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Tuesday afternoon
through late Tuesday night...

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Tuesday afternoon
through late Tuesday night.

* Snow accumulation: 4 to 6 inches... with higher amounts
possible.

* Timing: rain will overspread the area from the south early
Tuesday afternoon with a transition to snow occurring Tuesday
afternoon and evening. The snow will taper off late Tuesday
night or early Wednesday morning.

* Impacts: the first heavy snow of the season is possible during
the Tuesday afternoon commute. In addition... it is likely to be
a wet snow and any trees with leaves left on them may be
stressed... leading to broken tree limbs and isolated power
outages.

Top picture - upper penisula of Michigan - son went to college at Michigan Tech., in Houghton, MI, where they average 240 inches of snow per year.  Second is in Canada across from Sault St. Marie. MI., just north-east of the 'Soo' locks coming down the Greaat Lakes from Lake Superior.
Yep they do get some snow up there, to say the least....

Where I live two feet isn't that big a deal. A bigger deal is so much snow that you can walk to the top of your roof.

Yet another reason that I store a lot of extra food...can't go to the grocery store when the roads are blocked with five to six feet of snow.

When I was a kid living in NC schools would close with 1/4" because there wasn't any removal equipment.  It would melt at our house by noon but sometimes school would be closed for several days because the county roads were still covered.   ::cool::

We once got 6-8 inches.  Oh, man school closed for a week.  Snowed Monday, melted by Wednesday.  And it wasn't cold so it was fun to be outside.

I loved that attitude--it snows life stops.  ::danceban::

The weather's supposed to suck big time here today, just in time for the Veterans Day observance. Cloudy & in the low 40s now, falling temps all day, windy, rain changing to snow.

But I'll go anyway; all of our vets will never be forgotten in this house, nor in those of our kids and our grandkids. It is my duty to go to celebrate all veterans.

But there's a bright spot - no frigging JJJ this year; he used to show up to give a BS speech, but now he can talk to the bars in his cell. May Satan burn his soul.

We're honoring vets tomorrow with a big dinner.  Not everyone can be home tonight so it's tomorrow.  I just decided that a family gathering with good food and sharing memories or thoughts on those who served would be a good idea. I've already put a bottle in the fridge so we can toast them all.

I can remember in the mid nineties living in the North west Hills in Conn. and a blizzard knocking out the power in the whole town.

Well the kids come running in for dad and mom cause they were scared and me going out in the garage and firing up the generator and turning on the spots and the TV.

Before you know it the phone started ringing and we ended up with 26 visitors for the next couple days(which was fine with me because there were you kids involved).I did have an admittance charge which was gas bring what you got in case I need it.

We lived and had a hell of a party.

For the past two days there's been a dead deer laying in a field about 20 feet off the highway on my way to work. Both days it has been surrounded by about 30 vultures tearing off chunks of rancid, rotten flesh. And that still pales in comparison to the First Wookiee doing a pole dance.

But back on topic! We had a little bit of snow tonight, I think a bit more than the weather nerds were predicting. This is about the earliest I can remember seeing steady snowfall in the Charlotte area.

I drew that cartoon about 20 years ago.

I've seen pics like that, with all that snow. I'm surprised that it ever really melts.

More globullwarmink hitting the ground last night and this morning...commute was slower but not bad...supposed to get dumped on more pretty much all day...then several days running of single-digit temps to follow...

I guess I cannot escape it...winter is here for sure...and I haven't even put the cycle away yet...   ::facepalm::

Mountains of snow reignite fears over emergency access in northeast neighbourhoods

Mountains of snow reignite fears over emergency access in northeast neighbourhoods

Massive snow drifts that blocked streets in a number of north Calgary communities had stranded residents worried again about emergency access to their neighbourhoods.

High winds created huge piles of snow on the streets in several northeast communities, including SkyView Ranch, Redstone, Saddleridge and Whitehorn.

Snow drifts created similar fears in that part of the city during a major snowstorm in 2009.

Among those affected by nearly impassable roads was an ambulance transporting Coun. Jim Stevenson to the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Monday evening after the Ward 3 councillor fell outside of his Coral Springs home and broke his leg.

“The ambulance got stuck in the snow trying to bring me to the hospital,” said Stevenson, speaking from his hospital room on Tuesday while waiting for surgery.

With the help of citizens, including Stevenson’s wife, the emergency vehicle was eventually pushed free.

“It was a long process,” Stevenson said.

Issa Khalil has been stuck in his Whitehorn home since Monday with his wife and three young children. Large snow drifts in front of his home, which he says emergency vehicles would not be able to navigate, are causing Khalil to worry about his family’s safety.

“It’s almost like a state of emergency for us as far as not being able to receive any kind of medical attention or if a fire were to break out,” he said.

“It’s very frustrating. You get a sense of worry after awhile.”

When his son had a high fever Monday night, Khalil said he couldn’t get his truck off of his snowy street to take the two-year-old to the hospital. Calling an ambulance wasn’t an option either, he said.

“Not even pickup trucks can get through, no emergency vehicles, no fire trucks, nothing like that,” he said.

While Tylenol relieved his son’s fever, Khalil said he’s frustrated and worried, especially after he was told by the city that it could be up to five days before his street is cleared of snow.

“I’ve never seen the snow that high in my entire life. Some cars are so completely submerged in snow you can’t see them anymore,” he said.

EMS spokesman Adam Loria said Tuesday afternoon that no ambulances had been stranded or in need of a tow since the blizzard began.

“If we believe there’s an area that’s impassable or we may get in but not out of, we will play it safe and walk that extra bit with our equipment,” he said.

Fire spokeswoman Carol Henke said while crews have been kept busy responding to many traffic collisions, she was not aware of any issues with fire trucks getting stuck on snow-covered residential streets.

Like I said, "It's coming....."

No. I can get the mowing deck off with no sweat. BUT - the plow's too heavy for me (200+ lbs) to move around to install it. (My back & knees won't allow that.) My neighbor (the ex-football player) or my son will help me do it. No panic now though - no snow is forecasted for us - yet. We'll put in on in my small barn, out of any weather problems.

The one year we got 21 inches (yes, in NC), we were on our way to the store (yes, somebody  ::)  didn't get there beforehand) some young idjit came flying down the single track-set around the curve, hit the brakes and slid sideways off the road.  Bald tires, pickup truck w/empty bed (betcha the gas tank was almost empty too).  He gets out of the truck -- plastic bags outside his shoes -- and almost takes a header.  Gunsmith had put the come-along in our truck, so he pulled the fool's truck back onto the road while I lectured his ass.

Top it off with a slap upside the noodle and a warning "not to pull shyt like that around here again!  Now git!".

I had one idjit cut right in front of me this morning!  The roads are clear of snow now but with the temp dipping there are alternating patches of road and ice, and this jackass cuts right in behind one turnip and threatens to make mincemeat of me!  I backed off, flipped my high-beams (and although it had no chance of seeing it) flipped it the bird!

Dumbass!

And it is colder than Hillary Clinton's bed this morning!

(For the curious I think that level of cold is somewhere at or near absolute zero)

Something about winter weather really brings out the morons.  You have the garden variety morons who are barely able to navigate a motorway on a normal day, and the addition of winter weather is simply more than they can withstand. But I'm not talking about those morons. I'm talking about the ones who, for some reason, take snow and ice as their cue to become more aggressive in traffic. I have seen this so many times.

I'm not sure what motivates it. Are they trying to show what badasses they are? I mean who but an abject fool tailgates on slush and ice covered roads? I'm betting these people have never attempted an emergency stop in those conditions just to see how different it is.

Also there's no such thing as "all season" tires. They might be fine if you live somewhere that gets a little snow that melts in a day or two. But if you're going to be driving in it regularly, get real winter tires. With winter tires I can go just about anywhere in a front wheel drive car. I'd rather drive a 2WD car with winter tires than a 4WD without.

I've tried saying this in conversation only to have people ask me if I'm afraid to drive in snow. Because of course they know how to drive in bad weather.

A couple of years ago we were driving through Michigan when we came upon 100% ice covered roads.  So we crept along at about 25 mph in the right lane behind others doing the same.  In the left lane goes the SUVs speeding by and couple miles up we pass them in the ditch and one was even upside down (no one hurt). How could you be so stupid?
Title: Re: It's coming..........

There's really nothing worse in winter driving than the overconfident guy in a SUV.  For people like that, about the only thing 4WD is good for is getting you into situations that you then can't get out of.

When I go on surf fishing trips it's kind of the same thing on the sand. Somebody always tries it in a 2WD. The local tow operators love those people. Driving on the beach, the absolute best thing you can do is lower your tire pressure. I usually run about 14-16 psi. The tires really flatten out and just roll over the sand rather than digging into it.

We've certainly got cold this early.  The week after the Halloween blizzard it was below zero.  What is unique about this early cold snap is how wide spread it is, and how long it will last (past the extended forecasts).

Records are generally in the minus teens, this time of year, and we might flirt with one of two of those.

Meanwhile it's in the mid 70s in NC.  Feels unnatural to be that warm in December.  But looking at that map of the country, I don't recall seeing that much cold and snow in early December. Normally it's confined to the usual suspects.

I think there's something to the whole impending solar minimum and an overall cooling. The fact that it's totally at odds with the warmistas is just the icing on the cake.

I think you'll get the snow before we do. We're in that small area between the northern and southern snow storms. Go about 100 miles north, about 30 miles south, 20 miles east, and 75 miles west for snow, whereas we haven't even seen any flakes.

I think you'll get the snow before we do. We're in that small area between the northern and southern snow storms. Go about 100 miles north, about 30 miles south, 20 miles east, and 75 miles west for snow, whereas we haven't even seen any flakes.

I am not so sure though.

Two inches of the white shiiit this morning. I had loads of fun going to my doctor's appointment; people don't know how to drive - they must have gotten their licenses out of a box of Cracker Jack.

CG - you should try it down here.  They have never had to drive in snow 1/4" or more, so they continue 20 mph over, 10 feet between cars while on the phone, cutting traffic, still thinking that power braking at the last minute will stop them on a dime, all while on curves and hills.  The few dustings we get, I just throw another log on the fire and make sure the coffee pot remains full while watching the world go by.

I'd have just stayed home this morning if not for the doctor's appointment.

I drove to the Salvation Army store this afternoon and we donated an imitation Christmas tree, some ornaments, clothing, shoes, fans - I can't remember all the stuff, but it filled up the back of my pickemup truck.

No problem. The cars and my tractor are store in the garage, and neighbors are always ready to help us get out if the snow gets too high for us to get out of the garage.

Plus, a friend has a Bobcat and a backhoe with a scoop, and he'll help us too if we need it. He'd even do my 91-year old neighbor's driveway if it got too much for my tractor, but that has never happened.

Well, now it's -8oF out there, and still falling. And we're supposed to get snow beginning tomorrow evening and continuing through Christmas morning. No big thing if I have to plow our driveway and the 91 year old neighbor's, though. I have to keep them open; his 90 year old wife was taken to the hospital the day before yesterday.

We all do what we need to do, correct? That's what we stand for here. (At least to my way of thinking.)

That's it, fella; we do what we must.  You be safe plowing and traveling.

Plowing and driving 2 blocks to the neighbor's are not problems at all. We're on a rural road, and that's one of the reasons I added to the factory lights on my John Deere - so I can be seen, not necessarily so I can see. Brighter lights and a tail light give me more confidence. (Although if I have to plow at night, the lights are invaluable.)

I WAS able to get the mowing deck out to our small barn. Couldn't have done it without the tire chains.

The barn was actually built almost around a steer; the original owners' son had a steer for 4H. It has a brick floor and it's wired for electricity.

And we almost lost it when this happened. (A 125 year old white oak fell 2 feet away from the barn.)

We just talked to my BIL, who lives on 45 wooded acres south of Buffalo, NY. They got over a foot of snow every night for the last week (7 days). Some has melted, but he still has over 6' on the ground. So we have 6 inches of snow, and he has over 6 feet!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/lowfreeboard/Road%20Signs/DSCF3403.jpg) Except it's in Erie County.

His gas line froze up and they had no heat and could not use the stove. He has his own wellhead and pipeline (supplied by the Gas Company) and pays nothing for natural gas, but he's responsible for the maintenance. The deep snow prevented him from getting back to the wellhead with a 4x4 farm tractor, a neighbor couldn't get back there with a bigger 4x4 tractor either, and his SIL finally beat his way back with his huge 4x4 Case tractor. They worked for 15 hours to just get back to the wellhead. His SIL works with the gas company, and he used some special liquid to defrost and melt everything. They got the line cleared, and he's now running everything at the maximum temp setting 24x7 to get all of the moisture out of the line; if they need to cool the house(s) [one for them, one for his MIL, another for his FIL (he's sick and almost bedridden)] down, they just open the windows.

And you think YOU have problems...the water heater also crapped out during all of this mess.

Gee - the Rheem water heater I gave him only lasted for 23 years.  ::whatgives::

He and I are really glad they no longer have any livestock to worry about. (2 ponies, 3 goats, and a hog.) His daughter (our niece) however, had a goat die, which would normally be no problem. Trouble is: that goat and her horse were REAL close friends and slept in the same stall. They took the tractor, and the backhoe, and buried the goat. Now the horse lies on the ground, whinnying (sp?) and kicking the walls because she misses her goat so much.

I think I need a drink. Jack and water - hold the water and the ice.  ::snoshovel::  ::rimshot::

I've heard in Alaska they have problems with natural gas and propane because it can get so cold the gas will become so dense that it no longer has any vapor pressure.  You could open a valve all the way and no gas would come out.

Diesel fuel turning into jelly is a problem in cold climes, too.

As I promised.......

Quote
                                                             SNOW!

Dec 8   6 PM.  It started to snow. The first of the season and my wife and I took our cocktails and sat by the window watching the soft flakes drift down all over the area. It was beautiful!

Dec 9   We awoke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape! What a fantastic sight! Every tree and shrub covered with a beautiful white mantle! I shoveled snow for the first time in years and loved it. I did both our driveway and our sidewalk. Later the snowplow came along and covered up our sidewalk with compacted snow from the street, so I shoveled again.

Dec 12   The sun has melted all of our lovely snow. Oh well, I’m sure we will get some more before the lovely wintertime is through.

Dec 14   It snowed 8 inches last night and the temperature dropped to 20 degrees below zero. I shoveled the driveway and the sidewalk again, and then the snowplow came by and did its trick again.

Dec 15   Sold my sedan and bought a 4X4 so I can drive in the snow. Bought snow tires for my wife’s car.

Dec 18   Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway. All I hurt was my feelings.

Dec 19   Still cold (below zero) and the icy roads make for very tough driving.

Dec 20   Had another 24 inches of the white sheit last night. More shoveling in store for me today. That damned snowplow came by twice.

Dec 22   We are assured of a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white sheit fell today, and with this freezing weather it won’t melt until August. Got all dressed up to go out and shovel (boots, jumpsuit, heavy jacket, scarf, earmuffs, gloves, etc.) and then I had to pee!

Dec 23   I was going to go ice fishing today but my worms froze and I didn’t want the fish to break their teeth on my bait.

Dec 24   If I ever catch the son-of-a-bitch who drives that snowplow, I’ll drag him through the drifts by his balls! I think he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at 100 miles an hour to throw snow all over what used to be my driveway, sidewalk and lawn!

Dec 25   Merry Christmas! They predict 20 more inches of the f***ing sheit tonight. Don’t they know how many shovels full of snow 20 inches is? To hell with Santa -- he doesn’t have to shovel all of that white sheit. The snowplow driver came by asking for a donation, and I smacked him in the face with my snow shovel.

Dec 26   We got 28 more inches and then some. I must be going snow-blind or have a severe case of cabin fever, because my wife is starting to look good to me.

Dec 28   The toilet froze. If you go outside, don’t eat the brown or yellow snow.

Yeah, it's ridiculous...

1/1 - Overcast. High near 0F. Winds light and variable.

1/2 - Sunny skies. High 1F. Winds light and variable.

1/3 - Cloudy. High around 20F. Winds S at 15 to 25 mph.

1/4 - Cloudy skies early will become partly cloudy later in the day. High 24F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.

1/5 - Sunny, along with a few afternoon clouds. High 1F. Winds WNW at 10 to 15 mph.

1/6 - Some sun in the morning with increasing clouds during the afternoon. High -11F. Winds WNW at 10 to 20 mph.

1/7 - Mostly sunny skies. High -2F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

1/8 - Mainly cloudy. High 9F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph.

And there isn't an overnight with a low in positive numbers until 1/10 in the forecast!

Most in our parts use natural gas.  Many (like me) have a natural gas fireplace too, though I prefer the old wood burning kind.  At the lake it is propane and wood stove.

And I like to run a small space heater in the garage if I am fiddling about in there or just want a cigar without risking life and limb in the open outdoors!

Yep, natural gas.

Forecasts are all over the place.  The question is, just now much of this air that's been gripping central Canada comes south.  It has made it to northern Minnesota.  I saw a -44 on the map, earlier, in the International Falls area.

The all time record low high here is -17, tied in 1996.  I'm seeing -14 for Monday, after a -22 low.  I'd have to think the lows will be lower, with a high that low.  We'll see.  Even the weather weenies are starting to compare this to 1996, now.

It's no prob manually closing and opening it, but the better 2/3s has problems doing that. Plus - you'd have to go back into the house to manually lock the garage door. But all is well - now it's fixed! And the guy bolted the brackets to the wheel channels so it couldn't happen again.

Plowed another 6" about 1.5 hours ago, and it's ready to plow again. I may do it a little more than most folks, but I want to avoid the buildup of "stuff" in the middle of the driveway that could take out an oil pan. I also plow out the mailbox access for the mailman.

4.2 hours of plowing with my tractor today. I'm tired.....

And I'm not done. It's supposed to be very windy tonight, which means snow drifts out here in the sticks. So I have to at least plow out our neighbors; she's 89 and has to go to the doctor tomorrow to have surgical stitches removed from an emergency surgery she had about 8 days ago. I told her I'd take her if necessary, since I have a 4x4 pickup, and she started to cry. THAT sticks with you.

Aye, good boy!   ::thumbsup::

And keeping up on it is a good idea too, as I recall my brief plowing days it was a pain to run out of places to pile the stuff!  And even using a Bobcat or larger front-loader can only do so much...there is only so much area you can pile up before you have to do the last desperate act - load dumptrucks and haul it away!

But I recall thinking I could stack a bit more just...right...there...and it collapses and spills over!   ::pullhair::

Our Governor Retard just canceled school for Monday due to cold.

In NC snow requires absolutely perfect timing of cold air colliding with a storm system (unless you're in the mountains, where snow is common and can occur without an associated storm system). Usually the two ingredients defeat each other, i.e. the cold front pushes the moisture away or the moisture drags too much Gulf warmth with it and ends up as rain.

So my childhood involved much anxiety over the potential for school closures, and the Negative Forces Arrayed Against MeTM would so often quash my hopes of a snow day. Many a night into early morning I would keep looking outside, watching the daybreak news on TV for announced school closings, only to get yet another "So here's what happened" (more like what didn't happen) story from the weatherman. Usually they'd throw in a little snippet of news about how tantalizingly close it had come, with kids a county or two away enjoying a merciful respite from school that day. But not for me!

I still get annoyed when school closings fail to materialize, even all these years later. I guess some stuff just gets ingrained in you in childhood.

They also said we could get a "dusting" of snow, at least it should only be 1/2 -1 inch ---
{ya I know y'all got lots more}, but with the hills and curves thru the mountains - well - what mother nature puts here, this transplant will let her it take away. ::speechless::

Back in my day it took close to 2 feet of snow and/or -20oF temps or worse (temp, no windchill factor!) to even get a partial closing.  And then it was back home uphill again in deep numbing snow...

CG6468 - Just one more example of why I moved.  The three this I gave away first - two snow shovels and my snow blower.  It was a tough life getting use to golf on Thanksgiving morning and bass fishing Christmas afternoon, but somebody had to do it.  Now this year the fireplace is getting a work out and we are on the third pot of coffee, it's now all the way up to 33.  One more degree and that will be the high predicted, then it's downhill to MINUS 10, so like I said earlier - so  ::thinking:: you can keep this cold weather stuff, I like WARM.

I just came in from 1 hour of plowing the 18" drifts. (In the -12oF temperature.) But the temps are supposed to drop all friggin' day, and that's why I went out so early.

My John Deere has been sold into slavery.....

Anybody seen that worldwide weather expert Al Gore lately, and his global warming lies? ::pullhair::
It's bad enough down here when we aren't used to this, but you folks up north - STAY SAFE
We dodged a bullet yesterday, temps just above freezing, weatherman [?] off in prediction I guess, but today when I got up it was 25 and as he said temps are dropping.  Down to 20 already and have only been up hour and a half.  No snow yesterday, but rain, now frozen with some roads closed.  Tonight they are saying 6 degrees then wind 20-30 mph, so could feel like 8-10 below, below freezing for the next 60+ hours, and possible power loss in areas.

It's -14oF now, and it's falling. It will be all day, to about -20oF tonight, according to the weather wonks. Wind chill about -45 right now.

My wife has a doctor's appointment, but I'm not gonna go anywhere, except to take out the garbage for tomorrow morning. I need to blast off a little snow in the driveway, but I can do that when I take the garbage down to the street.

Yeah I share the curmudgeonly sentiment against this whole naming winter storms thing. I figure it to be part of the modern media culture's need to make everything sensational, and the collective narcissism of our age needing to believe we're the first to ever endure this or that.

Everything is a mass freak out now.

Yep.  Central NC counties considering canceling school tomorrow -- expecting temps down to 9 degrees tonight, well below freezing in the morning and throughout the day.  Starting the buses appears to be an issue, and having the chirruns chilling their buns at the bus stops.

Just when you thought it was safe to go outside... another blast of Arctic air to hit US next week

Experts don't expect temperatures as severe as last week's chill
New cold-front is expected to hit the East Coast on Thursday
Most of the country's temperatures will remain above zero degree - unlike the last Polar Vortex
Cities near the Great Lakes should expect lake-effect snow
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

PUBLISHED: 15:42 EST, 11 January 2014 | UPDATED: 08:02 EST, 12 January 2014

If you live in the American Midwest or East Coast, you may want to hold off on putting away your winter gear.

Just as temperatures are beginning to warm in much of the U.S, another arctic blast in the form of a polar vortex appears to be on the horizon.

The upcoming front of icy temperatures is expected to bring arctic air to southern Canada and then move into the northern plains of the U.S. before moving to the Midwest and East Coast - each of which is still recovering from last week's frigid temperatures.

Many areas are still recovering from the extreme weather last week, which has caused a dam of ice to block the Delaware river in New Jersey, forcing roads to close and causing a severe flood risk.

A Coast Guard ice cutter has been called in to try to clear shipping lanes but after 2 and half miles the 2ft ice had become to thick to break up.

Chunks of ice have been building up for days near the Trenton Makes Bridge, ABC News reported. But with the sudden warm temperatures, it is feared a fast thaw will flood low-lying areas.

'If in fact the ice jam breaks then we'll have a rush of water which could cause flash flooding,' Qareeb Bashir, of Trenton Emergency Management, said.

Flash flood warnings are in place in several of the regions affected by the polar vortex, as rain falling on the already frozen ground is forced to run off.

Nearly all of Pennsylvania is under a flood warning after the sudden rise in temperatures caused a faster than usual thaw.

A chaotic scene of ice chunks could be seen stretching across the state's Susquehanna river near Harrisburg on Saturday morning.

But the thaw is likely to be halted by the new cold front coming in, even though it is not expected to be as severe as the one last week.

'Following the retreat of arctic air this weekend, waves of progressively colder will move southward over Canada next week,' AccuWeather.com Lead Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok told AOL.com.

Forecasters expect the first stage of the new arctic blast to hit the northern plains by Monday, the lower Mississippi Valley and Midwest Tuesday and Wednesday then the East from Thursday.

BUT

If you miss what the Weather Channel used to be, before storm names and reality TV, Weather Nation is for you.  You don't even need an app or cable in the Twin Cities.  It's carried on one of the sub channels of Channel 11.  11-1 or 11-2, can't remember right off the top of my head.

The underlying cause of the warming in the northwest Pacific is as always something unrelated to what the generally lame media and climate change alarmist scream about....the large fiery ball located at the center of the solar system....the sun and it's not putting out the energy it was during the late 80's-mid 2000's.

We are going to pay for their lack of vision, lack of common sense, their lack of science, their lack of intelligence, their lack of interest in life because as the western countries have retreated in their development of new energy sources to heat their homes, they will begin to reverse course very slowly as political pressure from the masses freezing their asses off with extra long severe cold winters setting in.

Since longer winters will be the norm for the next 35 years or so, you can expect shorter summers and with it shorter growing seasons with frosts being later in the growing season on average. Add to the highly ill advised conversion of food staples(corn) to ethanol and we'll have a global pandemic of starvation but then none of this matters because we have to save mother Earth from ourselves. If she has massive volcanic eruptions with gigantic amounts of sulfur and carbon particulates thrown up in the atmosphere, the Earth could experience further catastrophe with almost no growing seasons in the Northern hemisphere.

What will the already war torn starving around the world do then? What would Omoa do then I wonder? Probably same old, same old thing he's doing now giving us the bird and transferring what little money we have left to everybody else. ::pullhair::

Never mind the cold weather, just be thankful we don't send any of the progtards from MD down there. The governor wants them to stay put, even the dead ones so you've lucked out. The conservatives in that state not so much.

There are 3 more inches out there. Not really a problem, but with the 30 MPH winds and higher gusts, it will drift like crazy.

My 91 year old neighbor's wife's sister died (she's 89), and they are going to the wake tomorrow about 0830. Their driveway drifts in really bad. So guess where I'll be.

Almost two hours plowing this morning. When it drifts, the snow really becomes compacted and heavy. It took me a LONG time to do my neighbor's driveway, but now they can get out and return with no problems. There's no way a car would have made it through the 24" drifts in their driveway.

The winds gusts of late have been impressive.

And normally I don't give much voice to "wind chill" or as the weather-nannies say "feels like" temps...I know when it is fricken cold!  And this morning it is cold...I call it face-breaking cold, cause it feels like if you try to open your mouth or move your face at all it will have parts just break off and fall to the ground.

FWIW: -17 (-42 WCF).

I hope my neighbors don't have to go anywhere until Wednesday. High of 0oF tomorrow and +19oF Wednesday.

Thanks alot - It's not coming --- It's here.  Nothing compared to y'all up in the frozen north- but in the last 1/2 hour we've gotten 1/2 inch or more and still coming down, schools closing, and the southern panic started.  Good thing is- got call and DON'T have to work today, Wife on her way home, another log on the fire and a fresh pot of coffee going.  With any more luck and I won't have to go in tomorrow at 6AM, if we get the 1`-3 inches predicted.   ::danceban:: ::whoohoo::

Just over one hour into this snow and the 'southern panic' is heavier than the snow.  Wife picked up grandson from school, over an hour ago, still isn't home yet- only just over 1 mile from school, and thats on the main road thru town - two traffic lights - talked to her and she said cars all over the place, + having to calm her down.  Told her once she gets grandson to home - stay there.

Just took picture of the cause of panic here, from front door.  Saw on TV, they have coverage all over the county, interstates are parking lots with people leaving cars and walking to anyplace warm, city street are now for bumper cars only.  Wife called and just got to daughters, accidents everywhere in town - over one and a half hours to go less than 7 miles.  They are not prepared for this down here, and admittedly I moved from it almost 30 years ago and don't like drive the hills and curves in this either.  Oh well fireplace is nice and about ready for more coffee.

The South does get comical when there is any sort of winter precipitation. But it's not entirely baseless for a number of reasons. Most states, cities, and counties in the South have little to no snow removal or road treatment equipment. There's no sense in spending all that money on something that would get used once per decade. So when it does snow the roads can remain treacherous.

The type of snow in the South is rather different too. The temperatures are warmer, much closer to the freezing point, so the snow tends to be very wet and heavy. I've driven in both, and the drier snow in cold climates is easier to navigate than the heavy slush we usually get here.

All of this combines to offer dumbassedness extra opportunities to reveal itself.

A common theme for most sourthern states until you get further west.  But they have to have road graders, that'll do for clearing main drags I expect.  And yes, the fluffy stuff is easier to drive in, but can compact quickly into ice if packed down by traffic if not plowed away in a timely fashion, the wet heavy stuff is just so water saturated it is hard to get any traction (unless you let some air outta your tires) and then the clear spots of road are probably puddles so its slip, slide and hydroplane.  But the wet stuff usually melts off quick, that is the kind of snow we typically get in March and April, unless you get a lot of it at once it is actually not that bad.

Only -8 this morning here, but the "black ice" still a problem.  Not so much for me and my all-wheel critter, but I did feel a little wiggle on one bridgedeck.  For some reason even in these parts the concept of NOT driving on the black ice (go left or right of it!) seems to elude too many folks.  Still have some of the same spots experiencing wipe outs this morning and people going off into ditches...not as many as yesterday, but still...

Gotta be imports...

Look like today will be the warmest for the next 10 days, at 25

Here's the depressing string of numbers

25,19,6,15,11,10,11,2,8,13  Daytime
19,-13,0,-7,-2,-5,-7,-7,-2,2  Nights

It's not so much the extremes.  It's the consistency of the cold, this year.  We haven't had a good thaw since Thanksgiving.

9 degrees this morning in Jefferson county, AL according to TV weather geeks.  Wish I didn't give away my ice skates when I moved from MI almost 30 years ago, because the entire county is an ice rink, cars everywhere.  They are saying it won't get above freezing until later today or may tomorrow so the ice stays.  The only thing the county can do is sand the roads and then only the interstates, so we wait for nature.  Wife made it to daughters and spent the night, another log on the fire and coffee is going, haven't lost power yet so camping in my own house.   ::oldman::
Many school kids had to stay at school all night because their folks couldn't get them.  Our church has day care, pre-school and kindergarden for about 400 kids daily and 8 had to stay there, 3 teachers stayed with them, luckily we have a kitchen. gym, they also showed some movies.  We also have cots and blankets, so they were not in any danger.

Now it's supposed to snow tomorrow afternoon, Friday, and Saturday. Total of about 8". We have about a foot on the ground.

I'm glad my buddy with the 4x4 with the plow knocked back the plowed snow on the edges of my and my neighbor's driveways. Now I can plow the new white shytt again with no probs.

We have been having an unusual winter here is south central CO. For one thing, until yesterday and today, there has been no snow since before Thanksgiving. But the really strange thing has been the warm temperatures. This has been the warmest January (and I do mean warm) since I moved here twenty years ago.

But yesterday it started to snow and it has continued through today and this evening. I am not a big fan of big snows* because I hate having to blow it or plow (or plough, if you prefer) it but I also know that if we do not get enough we will be facing another summer of huge fires. We are in a bad way in that area because about a zillion trees in the forest have been killed by insects. Rather than allowing them to be harvested for lumber or even firewood, the Forestry Service has chosen to let them stand because nature or something.

And fire is natural.

Organic. Whatevs...

So since the idiots who are in charge refuse to cut the deadwood down and remove it...we need lots of snow to at least slow down the inevitable fires that will come when lightning strikes the dead trees. But so far this winter we have not gotten much snow at all. There is still February, I guess. And some of March. But after that we will have to rely on rain. Which has lightning.

*Big snows for us are measured in feet, not inches. A typical snow where I live is anywhere from six to twelve inches. I don't even bother getting out the snow blower for anything less than five inches. A big snow is two, three, four or more feet. We usually get one of these a year. Sometimes two. People have to shovel their roofs in order to prevent structural failure because the building code here only plans for about two feet of snow on the roof. The problem that we have to deal with the most under these conditions is just where to put the stuff. Sometimes the snow plow can only clear one lane because there just isn't any room to shove the stuff to the side. I remember some years where there is a wall of snow running down the middle of main street where the snow has been shoved. It takes a day or two to pick it up with front end loaders and dump trucks. They usually haul it to the high school football field and dump it there. It can also be a real problem when livestock can literally walk over their fences and just go wherever they want. Winter craziness.

Bright & sunny, and 7oF now. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 23oF.

BUT - Tomorrow night a snow warning goes into effect, with about 8" by Wednesday afternoon. Then sunny and 26oF Thursday and Friday, in time for a forecast of an even worse snow storm Saturday night and Sunday, with about 12" additional snow predicted..

My wife went grocery shopping today, in Indiana, about 8 miles from us. It took her 2.75 hours to get home (normally about 20 - 25 minutes) because the roads are a disaster from all the snow we got today. We were supposed to get a max of 1"; now we have about 5". I'll have to plow again tonight, and again tomorrow morning.

Laugh it up, fuzzball.  A pattern change be a coming, starting later this week.  Nothing but blissfull 20's and 30's coming up.  I think we're over the hump.  Normal to slightly above for 10 days gets us to Feb 20.  Not to say we can't be adding to our likely 42 days (after tonight) of sub-zero temps, but it gets mighty harder as you get into March.

It's comin' --Ha "It's here"  North of Birmingham, Alabama we got about 3-3 1/2 inches of the white stuff in 2 hours and they say maybe another half inch to come.  I know it ain't much to y'all up north, but it's more than we can handle down here.  Their telling us to stay off the roads until about noon tomorrow when it warms up to melt the snow

He said, "Bring down your plow!" The poor guy got 4" of flurries. He said I'd be rich if I was down there with my tractor just clearing driveways!

Six inches of snow yesterday compressed into four inches from sleet last night; snowing again for about an hour.

Trees look pretty; all the branches are coated.

Oh, and we're expecting temps in the 60s/70s by Tuesday.  At which point "the skinny, blue children" whom have no coats -- thus shouldn't be expected to be waiting at bus stops in the frigid -- will re-emerge, from the school closings, in their usual shorts and flip-flops.

Hope CG isn't on the way -- roads totally dry, only snow left is back in the woods where the sun hasn't reached yet.  --  temp on our covered patio 54 degrees and it's sunny.  Was at work by 9:45 and just got home - As they say here, "If you don't like the weather in Alabama -- wait a minute".

We got about 10" of snow here near Charlotte, though the amount of sleet and freezing rain on top of it did compress it down. I think we probably got closer to a foot of actual snow. Very pretty, and fortunately the power stayed on for the duration. I was actually slightly disappointed, because I wanted an excuse to use my new generator.

Freaking lousy warm air just pushed in so fa inland it began to rain on top of the 12 plus inches of snow in Baltimore. That was all it took to ruin my day, everyone had no problem removing the snow in and around their cars. sh*t! No Bobcat necessary. Perhaps in March will get another Noreaster that will dump 18 plus, who knows. Hate these piss ant little snow accumulations. ::cussing::

Isn't it nice to know Mother Ghia dropped another 6 inches of global warming between now and my last post. This means I get to shovel the driveway and clear the cars off one more time. I'm certain the plow truck will come by and push another mound of snow at the bottom of the driveway apron.  ::snoshovel:: seems so appropriate now. ::whatgives::

Yesterday and today two guys were on our roof to shove off the snow. Total = $900. The snow was over 2' deep on most of the roof, with one section at a 3' depth, and ice jams caused some water to come down at the windows in the house. No real damage, though, and now the gutters are running freely. The snow on the ground and from the roof is over 4' deep now.

Looks like the pattern is changing back.  But, later in the year now, that means teens in the day, 0 give or take at night.

That record from 81-82 (45 days below zero) is now in range.  We're at 42.  Actually that would be top 10, but if we weren't a metro area much larger than it used to be, creating urban heat island...

Duluth sets record with 60 winter days in which lows drop below zero; forecast calls for snow (http://www.startribune.com/local/245748461.html)

Duluth, being a hard core Democrat city, has been stagnant over the decades.  No doubt the Twin Cities have been saved several days due to heat island.

Raining hard, thunderstorms earlier, some snow melted, gutters working fine. When the rain stops later, then the 50+MPH winds come, with gusts up to 65 MPH. I hope the forest preserve trees protect us a bit.

Here are some pics I took when I was plowing the other day, after my buddy with his backhoe had come to knock back some of the piles so I had somewhere to plow the new stuff.

We have 'em around here, too. I remember up in Charlevoix, MI, in my USCG days, we'd put an international orange ball on the cars' radio antennae so we could be seen at intersections with high snow piles. Can't even do that any more since such things are generally not on cars today.

When we were there, they averaged over 200" of snow a year, some of which fell before Halloween and remained until mid-May.

That post storm 24" on the ground was the most since 1982, when we set the record at 38" in the Twin Cities.  In fact, this was just the 8th year in history, a snow depth hit the 2 foot mark.

Now, it's time to start climbing up the top 10 winters, for sub zero days.

http://www.startribune.com/weather/blogs/Paul_Douglas_on_Weather.html (http://www.startribune.com/weather/blogs/Paul_Douglas_on_Weather.html)

Good read, from Pee Wee Douglas.  As you can see, most of these records were set from the 30's on back, before the Urban Heat Island got into full gear, with growth.  This winter, 1982, and 1979 are basically it, for post 30's record winters.

We've been having all these Scots fertilizer ads running on radio and TV up here for several weeks now...do these people get locked into national deals or what?  It must be something like that because unless they all have their heads up their butts they should know it is still WINTER up here and we have several inches, feet actually in many parts, of fricken snow!  We don't even know if we still have a lawn!  Perhaps they just like to piss us off up here?  Maybe that's the marketing genius behind this campaign.

... Winter Storm Warning now in effect from 7 PM this evening to
7 PM CDT Friday...

The Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 7 PM this evening
to 7 PM CDT Friday.

* Timing... a light wintry mix of precipitation today will
transition to snow this evening. The snow will be heavy at times
tonight and Friday morning before tapering off Friday
 afternoon.

* Snow accumulation... 8 to 12 inches... with the heaviest amounts
expected roughly along a line from Redwood Falls and New Ulm to
Monticello and Cambridge. Snow amounts will be lowest south and
east of the Twin Cities Metro where a wintry mix may persist the
 longest.

* Wind... northeast 10 to 15 mph becoming northwest and
increasing to 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph late Thursday
night.

* Impacts... travel will be hazardous Thursday night and Friday.
This will be a wet snow which will be difficult to shovel.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of
snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in
an emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight...
food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

 :'(

Soooo tired of this winter...

Dang it's turned off a little chilly here in Tennessee. It's only freakin' mid 60's. We should already be in the low 70's with a slight breeze. Damn global warming.
